The collision, interaction and intersection of waves inform the design of this series of work.

The use of mathematical modelling techniques generates forms which lie at the fulcrum of complexity and simplicity. By using equations to drive the form, parameters can be adjusted to control the degree of complexity, whilst the use of a mathematical function means that no extraneous detail is introduced, leaving (as in nature) only that which is necessary. It is perhaps for this reason that the work is reminiscent of natural, organic forms.

Shelley is a glass-maker working predominantly with the lost-wax casting process. She has extensive experience of a diverse range of projects, from small-scale wafer-thin castings to large cast panels.

Having learnt techniques as diverse as glass blowing, lost wax casting and the delights of cold-working (hours spent painstakingly grinding and polishing glass), it is towards the process of lost wax casting that she has gravitated.  It is a technique which affords enormous scope for expression.  Her over-arching preoccupation has been with the unique interaction between glass and light.  By gaining knowledge of glass forming she has been able to create forms which exploit this relationship to explore a broad range of themes.

In addition to traditional craft skills, Shelley has acquired knowledge of 3D CAD modelling and associated technologies. Her use of digital technologies segues seamlessly with hand-making techniques to produce stimulating work beyond the limitations of the human hand.
